Thorpe Family Just found your website and found my mother's cousin on it; Lance Corporal Edward (Hills) Bamber who died in 1916 in France. My gt. gt. grandfather was James Thorpe who ran the Malt Shovel Inn at Oswaldkirk, as did his son Edward and his son in law Thomas Bamber. Any info on the Thorpe family greatly appreciated, thanks. Posted by Rosemary Ramm on 30 May 2010 Backhouse Family Researching my family tree led me to your wonderful village. My ancesters ran the Bay Inn pub from 1860's to the 1880's. They also farmed at the nearby Marton Abbey. I was fortunate to find a gravestone of Edmund Backhouse in the churchyard. I believe it has now been broken. I would be extremely grateful if anyone has any knowledge of the Backhouses in Stillington. Posted by Steve Backhouse on 01 March 2010 War Memorial Just a comment read the details about both my Uncles who lost their lives in WWI. Able Seaman William Hammond and Corporal Walter Hammond. I am the son of Fred Hammond who emigrated to Canada in 1925. Would love to find out more about their mother Annie Lane who was born in Stillington but unable to find her baptism in the Stillington Registers. Does anyone know where this family was baptized? Her parents were William Lane and Ann Scaife who married 29 August 1868 in Stillington. Annie was born 21 July 1870 but no baptism in Stillington. Would love to hear from anyone who can shed some light on where the children of this union were baptized. Love your site brings back memories of my visit a couple of years ago. Posted by Rick Hammond on 11 January 2010 There were 2 William Lanes in Stillington, both adult in 1893. One was a farmer. That is all I know of him. 2nd was a Tailor, he died 24.2.1917. His wife Bertha remarried a man called Chapman. He lived only for about 9 months after marriage. She was still alive on 13/3/1950 in Stillington when she sold a property here. Posted by grahame.richardson on 03 April 2010 Woods of Woodville My Grandmother, Mary Wood, 1886-1950, lived at Woodville with her family until her marriage when she moved to Newcastle. I would be interested to know what happened to her siblings and their families. I have family photos but don't have a clue who they all are! My late father visited Stillington in his school and university holidays and was a keen photographer. He later became an Anglican clergyman. I am particularly interested in the McLoughry family who have links to at least one of the mills in the Marton area going back to the early 19th century. Any info on the mills or this family would be great. I am the great (x5) grandaughter of a John Cordukes who was actually born in Stillington in 1798 and is shown in the 1823 Bulmer's Trade Guide as being in the trade of a joiner in the village. I am having the greatest difficulty in finding out from which of the local Cordukes sons he sprang, there being many families at Sheriff Hutton, Westow and Crambe. Presumably John's father and mother must have lived in Stillington at some time around the late 18thC.? But, who were they? I visited your village recently, and found it truly beautiful! Posted by Pam Cordukes on 09 August 2009 Hi Pam, Stumbled across your posting & thought I'd say 'hi'. My father (another John Cordukes) was recently in Sheriff Hutton researching ancestors. My great-great grandfather came to Australia in the 1850's and was, I believe, the son of another John Cordukes. I'm not so well versed in the intricacies of the family tree but can find out more if you're interested. Anyway, best regards from Sydney, your cousin, John Cordukes Posted by John Cordukes on 01 September 2009 Hi John,Thanks for your response from Australia !! Sorry for my own delayed response. Unfortunately, your email address as indicated on the site, does not appear to want to go thru'. Please feel free to try mine.Pam Cordukes. Posted by Pam Cordukes on 29 October 2009 Hi there, I'm also a Cordukes descendant of John 1798. I've done a lot of research on the family so if you care to send me your email address I will email my records to you. I think the two John's are cousins. Incidentally I'm in NZ. Another relative, Robert Cordukes of Haxby has also done work on this family. Rosemary Posted by Rosemary Lewis on 21 May 2010 Can I please add my twopennyworth? My 4grandfather Charles Cordeaux (baptised Cordukes in Crambe in 1795) was brother to William (who went to Australia) and John (who became vicar of Hoylands). I'm having terrible trouble working out which Richard is their father! In the meantime I have collected a lot of information about the family. Can we share?
