Stillington Sawmill

FATAL ACCIDENT - On Wednesday week Wm Knowlson, a young man of 17 years, met with an accident at Stillington which terminated fatally. He was a carpenter and in the employ of H. Croft Esq. The deceased was engaged in sawing wood at the saw-mill near the above village, when a piece of timber came in contact with a portion of the machinery and rebounding struck the deceased in the lower part of the body. He was taken home, mortification ensued and after much suffering died on Thursday morning. An inquest was subsequently held by Mr. John Wood, the coroner, and a verdict of 'Accidental Death' recorded. What renders this accident of a more melancholy interest is the fact that a widowed mother partly derived her support from the deceased.
Note: William's parents were William and Frances. William Senior died in February 1833 aged 43. Frances was left to bring up their four children, the eldest, John, being ten and the youngest George only three months old.
