7th Govt examination this am by Mr Eley asst H M. I. Holiday in afternoon.
8th Mr Dale, attendance officer visited. Placed all scholars and standard higher for the present. Took Louise Salmon’s name off the register on learning she had left school.
10th Holiday this afternoon.
14th Rev Jemison visited. Commenced copy books with Lt 1. Attendance officer visited and paid fees for last quarter of non pauper children.
16th Rev Jemison visited bringing the duplicate govt examination schedule, a copy of which is entered in the summary.

28th Very thin upper standards this am. Punished Robt Scaife and Joshua Davill for coming to school at 2.20 this afternoon. They were both marked absent.
May 2nd Rev Jemison visited & read the notice of Diocesan inspection, which is fixed for Friday May 16th.
5th Commenced Long Division in St III. Sewing taken after playtime the pm for convenience of sewing mistress.

June 2nd Re-opened with a fair school. Readmitted Tom Danby. Commenced multiplication in St II.

4th Sewing taken this pm instead of tomorrow for convenience of sewing mistress.
5th Very thin attendance this pm. Many girls ‘keeping mother’. Find that many boys & girls on passing the 4th or higher standard at the last examination have left school
11th Admitted Fred Wilson - an infant.

13th Rev Jemison visited.
16th Great difficulty in getting school fees from many scholars. Sent some of the worse offenders home for it & threatened others. Allowed Tom Bradley to go home as he has a bad eye. Alllowed some girls to leave early to attend a tea party.
17th RevJemison for scripture this am. Commenced multiplication of tens, hundreds etc with St II. Some scholars away at Huby Feast.
19th Thin attendance again. Scholars at York Gala.
24th Punished many boys for striking and calling names.
25th Thinner school owing to Sports at Farlington.
30th Commenced Compd Addition in St III. Dr Gramshaw, one of managers, visited the school. Sent in resignation to the manager giving 3 months notice, which will terminate 30th Sept.
July 1st Very thin attendance owing to the wet weather. Commenced weight & measures with St IV. Rev Jemison visited.
3rd Punished John Davill & others for playing in school during playtime.
7th No Scripture this am. Commenced ordinary work & marked registers at 9 o clock. Closed at 11, holiday this pm.

September 22nd Re-opened with very fair school amongst the lower Standards - upper standard very thin. Admitted 3 new scholars Albert & Mary Grainger, & John Robt Raze.
24th No school today. Master at Easingwold.

Oct 11th On Monday Morning, 6th Oct, I, Edward Walker took charge of this school. In the unavoidable absence of Mrs Walker, my sister Sarah Walker assisted me by taking the Infants. The attendance was fair in the lower standards, but very thin in the upper. The vicar visited several times.
18th Vicar visited several times. The attendance was rather better this week. I made considerable progress in dictation. Mrs Walker still absent and her place supplied by my sister, Sarah Walker. No needlework taken yet.
25th The vicar visited several times. Mrs Walker commenced teaching duties on Tuesday afternoon and I commenced Geography with the boys.
Nov 1st The vicar visited several times. On Tuesday I took out the old desks and rearranged the room and put up some new pictures. Worked steadily through the week.
8th The vicar visited several times. This week I drilled St II well in the tables and multiplication, in which they are much behind The attendance was slightly improved this week.
22nd The vicar visited several times. Began to teach the tonic sol-fa from the Modulation this week. Worked steadily through the week.
Dec 6th The vicar visited Tuesday. Practised the scales and intervals in singing for 5 or 10 mins nearly every morning. This week we got a blank map of England and Wales from which I began to teach St III
13th The vicar visited Wednesday. Worked steadily through the week. Attendance very fair.
20th The vicar visited on Monday. The Weather was very sharp this week but the attendance kept very fair. Pressed St V with Arithmetic as they are very much behind.
21st The Weather was very severe & attendance consequently very poor. So few children came on Wednesday morning that we did not open school but broke up until Jan 5th for the Xmas Holidays.

Jan 10th Re-opened school on Monday. The weather was very frosty and cold all week and attendance consequently thin. The vicar visited several times. Mrs Walker was unable to attend on Thurs and Fri.
17th The attendance was poor this week on account of the severity of the weather. We have several half-holidays this week on account of he parties which were held at school. The vicar visited several times.
24th The attendance still poor, owing chiefly to the weather. No visitors this week. Mrs Walker was unable to attend during the week.
31st Vicar visited several times this week. Mrs Walker took sewing this week, but was unable to attend through sickness on Friday.
Feb 7th The vicar visited several times. Mrs Walker unable to attend this week through sickness. There was a considerable improvement in punctuality this week.
14th The vicar took the first division in scriptures on Tuesday and Thursday ams. Mrs Walker still unable to attend. I let the children out a little earlier this week instead of having a playtime.
21st The vicar took the first division in scriptures on Tuesday and Thursday ams. Mrs Walker still unable to attend. Needlework was taken by Miss Walker.
28th The vicar visited several times. Mrs Walker came to school on Monday but was unable to come for the rest of the week. Miss Walker took the sewing. On Friday we received various forms for the Annual Inspection.
Mar 7th Mrs Walker resumed her duties on Monday morning. The vicar took the first division in Scripture on Tuesday and Friday ams. I punished a boy on Friday for repeatedly talking.
14th The vicar took the first division in Scripture on Wednesday and Friday ams. On Monday am I examined St II-VII.
21st The vicar visited several times. On Monday am examined St II-VII. Mrs Walker was away from school on Friday pm.
28th The vicar visited several times. This week I devoted a little extra time to singing and Geography. On Tuesday am the vicar brought the Notice for the Annual Inspection.
April 4th The vicar visited several times. No school on Thursday am owing to the concert held in school on Wednesday night. Began school at 1pm on Wednesday and Friday.
11th Government Exam Tuesday by H M Sut. Inspector Mr Eley. Holiday in the afternoon. Moved all the scholars a standard higher on Wednesday morning and began the new rules in Arithmetic. The vicar visited several times.
18th The vicar took the first division in scripture on Tuesday and Friday ams. Worked steadily on the new rules in Arith. In each standard.
22nd Diocesan Inspection H. Toovey
25th On Wednesday am the Rev. H. Toovey examined the school in Religious Knowledge. On Thursday the attendance was very thin.
May 2nd Vicar visited on Tuesday pm. Mrs Walker was away from school on Wednesday and Thursday. The attendance was thin this week. On Friday we had a holiday.
9th Mrs Walker was absent for the greater part of this week. The vicar visited on Monday pm. The attendance was very thin this week. Worked steadily through the week.
16th The attendance was very thin this week. Drilled St II in their tables. On Friday we received the Govt Report. Broke up on Friday pm for a week - Whitsuntide Holidays.
June 6th The vicar visited on Tuesday and hung up a new copy of Conscience Clause. There was a very good attendance on Monday. Worked hard at long division in St III and multiplication in St II.
13th The vicar visited several times. Worked hard with long division and multiplication in ST III & II and compound short division in St IV. On Friday the vicar brought a new modulation.
20th On Monday I admitted a new scholar. The vicar took the first division in scripture on Tuesday am. On Thursday we had a holiday to York. There was a very thin attendance on Friday.
27th Vicar visited several times and took the first division in scriptures on Wednesday am. Worked hard on long division and multiplication in standards III & II.
July 4th The vicar took the first division in Scripture on Tuesday am and visited on Thursday pm. Worked hard on Arithmetic. In St II & III, keeping in during playtime those who did not get enough sums right.
11th The vicar visited several times. We had a holiday all day on Wednesday and on Thursday morning on account of the children’s annual trip to Scarborough. On Friday afternoon after 4 o clock the infants and those children who did not go to Scarborough had their usual treat in Mr Wood’s field.
18th The vicar visited on Tuesday Morning. On Tuesday afternoon we had a holiday. Mrs Walker took the school on Wednesday as I was in York.
25th The vicar visited on Wednesday. Miss ?? Sowell from York came to school to teach the first class. Worked hard at the arithmetic in St II & III.
Aug 1st The vicar visited several times. Miss Sowell taught the first class on Monday, Tuesday & Wednesday. There was considerable improvement in the Arithmetic of St I & II this week.
8th The vicar visited on Thursday afternoon. Mrs Walker was absent on Wednesday & Friday.
15th The vicar visited on Thursday afternoon. On Wednesday afternoon so few children came on account of Farlington Sports that we had a holiday. Mrs Walker was absent several times this week.
22nd On Tuesday I caned Robert Scaife for playing truant and Richard Spruce for indecent conduct. Worked hard at Reduction in IV and compound addition and subtraction in St III. Mrs Walker absent on Thursday & Friday. Vicar visited on Monday. Broke up Thursday afternoon for the Harvest Holidays.

Oct 10th Reopened the school on Monday with a very thin attendance. The vicar visited on Wednesday afternoon. On Thursday morning I caned Robert Scaife for playing truant.
17th Some children still absent on account of the harvest & potatoes. Worked hard at the reading in St II & III. Began to make St III put their sums on paper. The vicar visited several times.
24th There was a fair attendance this week. On Thursday afternoon the vicar addressed the children to the subject of putting the fees away in the savings bank. On Monday I examined St II-IV and arranged the children in the order of merit.
31stThe vicar visited on Thursday afternoon. Many boys were absent this week potato gathering, as the weather was very fine. Worked hard at reading in St II.
Nov 6th The vicar visited on Wednesday Morning and took the first division in Scripture. Friday was hiring day at Easingwold and the school was consequently very thin. Many boys were absent.
13th There was better attendance this week. On Friday afternoon the vicar spoke to the children about the savings bank and addressed on capital.
20th The vicar visited several times. Devoted a little extra time to singing this week as the children were preparing for a concert.
27th The children gave a concert on Wednesday night which was very successful, no school on Thursday. The vicar visited on Friday afternoon.
Dec 5th The vicar took the first division in scripture on Friday morning. Began short division with St II. On Friday night the children repeated (by request) their concert when there was again a good audience.
12th The vicar visited several times. Worked hard at the short division in St II.
19th On Monday I examined St II-VI. Spelling was very backward in St II & III, and Arithmetic in St II. On Friday the vicar brought the forms for drawing from science and art department.
26th The weather was very severe on Monday & Tuesday and the attendance was consequently very thin. On Wednesday morning so few children came that I sent them home again, and broke up until Jan 4th 1892 for the Christmas Holidays.

Jan 9th Reopened the school on Monday with a very thin attendance. This week the vicar received the various forms about drawing.
16th The attendance was not good this week. The school was closed on Monday afternoon, and on Tuesday & Wednesday on account of the Choir Party, and Treat given to old and poor.
23rd Rather a poor attendance this week. The vicar visited several times. Mrs Walker was unable to attend on Thursday & Friday.
30th Mrs Walker unable to attend owing to the death of a relation. The vicar visited several times. The attendance was very thin almost all the week.
Feb 6th On Monday I examined Sts II - VI and arranged for the children in the order of merit. The dictation was rather better but arithmetic was still backward. The vicar visited several times.
13th On Monday and Friday afternoons I examined St II & VI. The work on Friday was considerably better. The vicar visited on Monday morning.
20th On Monday I examined St II & VI and arranged the children in order of merit. Thursday & Friday the weather was very severe & the attendance consequently thin. The vicar visited on Monday & Friday.
26th I visited the school this afternoon and examined and tested the registers and found nothing incorrect. W H Jemison.
Feb 27th On Monday I examined St I - VI and arranged the children in order of merit. Worked hard all week at the arithmetic in St II & IV. On Friday the vicar brought the different forms for the Annual Examination.
March 5th On Monday morning I examined St II - VI and arranged the children in order of merit. Thursday & Friday mornings were so cold and stormy and there were so few children I did not open the school. On Wednesday received notice that the Drawing examination would take place on March 18th.
19th Rather thin attendance on Monday and Tuesday owing to the severe weather. On Friday morning the boys were examined in Drawing by Major Richards.
24th I visited the school the forenoon and examined the registers and found nothing incorrect. W H Jemison.
26th On Monday I examined all the Standards and arranged the children in order of merit. On Tuesday morning we received notice that the Government examination would take place on Friday morning April 1st.
April 2nd On Monday I examined all the Standards and arranged the children in order of merit. On Friday morning the school was examined by Mr Thackray. On Friday afternoon we had a half holiday.
The time marked for drawing in the time table for Wednesday afternoon is changed to Wednesday morning, changes places with arithmetic.
9th On Monday I moved the children into their proper standards and began the new rules. There was a fair attendance at the beginning of the week but it fell off a little towards the end. Vicar visited several times.
16th On Monday the vicar read the Notice (and affixed it to the door) that the Scripture Examination would take place on April 26th. Broke up on Thursday until Easter Tuesday.
23rd Reopened Tuesday with a very fair attendance. Opened the school at one on Thursday afternoon & let the children out earlier to prepare for the concert in the evening. Miss Borwell of Clifton School took the Infants on Friday Morning. The vicar visited several times.
30th On Tuesday afternoon Rev H. Toovey, the Diocesan Inspector, examined the school in religious subjects. On Friday we received the Annual Government Report.

General Report: 'The children passed a very satisfactory examination, they have been ably taught and their answers were intelligent. The New Testament and the explanation of Catechism by St II & III were not so good as the rest of their work. The singing was pleasing & repetition was well known.'
Government Report
“The children have passed a fair examination in Reading & Spelling. Writing is good in the first standard, but that of the other standards is, on the whole, rather poor. The results of the examination in arithmetic are unsatisfactory, and the infants are backward in reading. Needlework is carefully taught and the exercises are well done. Improvement in the elementary subjects, especially in arithmetic, will be expected next year or it will be necessary to recommend the formal warning under Article 86. More desk accommodation is desirable. The registers should be tested by the Managers at least once a quarter at irregular intervals.”
H.M. Inspectors reports that a formal warning under article 86 may become necessary unless improvement in elementary instruction takes place.

26th On Wednesday the Rev Henry Cattley and several ladies visited the school and heard the children sing and recite. The vicar visited several times.
July 2nd The vicar visited on Monday and Wednesday. Admitted two new scholars on Monday. Worked hard at fractions in St VI.
9th There was good attendance this week. The vicar visited on Monday and Tuesday. On Friday the school was used as a polling station of the Thirsk and Malton Division.
16th Arthur Scaife returned to school on Monday after being away sick for more than six months. The vicar visited several times. Worked hard at the fractions in St VI & at division in St III.
23rd The vicar visited several times. Paid especial attention to the arithmetic in St IV & VI. Attendance only fair.
30th The vicar visited several times. Miss Thompson from the Halifax Parish Church Schools took the first class in reading on Tuesday morning and the girls in needlework on Wednesday and Thursday afternoons.
Aug 6th I was absent on Monday and Mrs Walker took the school. The vicar visited several times. On Thursday I took St II-VII to the Hall to see a display of fireworks.
13th Paid special attention to practice in St V and to Reduction in St IV. The vicar visited several times.
20th The vicar visited on Monday and Tuesday. On Thursday afternoon Miss Cattley and Miss Hardy, and Miss Arthur, a teacher from India, visited the school when the children sang and recited for them. On Friday afternoon the children had their annual Summer Treat. This year they were taken to York & visited the circus.
27th The vicar visited several times. Attendance very good this week. On Friday afternoon the infants had their treat - tea in the school room and games and sports in Mr Wood’s Croft.
Sept 3rd The vicar visited several times, and on Thursday afternoon sent down a basket of red currants for the children. Broke up Friday for the Harvest Holidays.

Oct 15th Reopened the school on Monday Oct 10th with a very fair attendance. Mrs Walker not able to attend through sickness. Worked steadily through the week.
22nd Attendance only very moderate. Friday very wet and many children absent. Mrs Walker unable to attend. The vicar visited several times.
